Orthobiologics & Regenerative Treatments
At Town Center Orthopedics, we are committed to offering the most advanced, evidence-based treatment options available—including regenerative therapies that work with your body’s own healing capabilities. Orthobiologics represent a transformative approach to musculoskeletal care, allowing many patients to find lasting relief and restored function without the need for surgery.
If you are living with joint pain, a sports injury, or the early effects of arthritis, our orthopedic specialists will evaluate whether a regenerative treatment may be appropriate for your condition and lifestyle.
What Are Orthobiologics?
Orthobiologics are natural substances—including cells, tissue, blood components, and growth factors—that are harnessed to aid in the treatment of orthopaedic injuries and conditions. These biologically derived therapies are designed to:
- Replace or regenerate damaged or lost tissue
- Stimulate the body’s natural healing response
- Reduce pain and inflammation
- Improve joint function and mobility
Orthobiologics may be obtained from your own body (autologous) or from a carefully screened donor (allogeneic). They can be administered as a minimally invasive injection during an office visit, or as part of a surgical procedure to enhance outcomes and promote faster healing.
These treatments may be used as a standalone conservative therapy or following orthopaedic surgery to support recovery and improve long-term results.
Conditions Treated with Orthobiologics
Our physicians may recommend orthobiologic therapy for patients experiencing:
- Articular cartilage injuries – Damage to the smooth cartilage lining the joints, often resulting from trauma or overuse
- Early osteoarthritis – Gradual cartilage breakdown in the knee, hip, or shoulder before joint replacement becomes necessary
- Ligament injuries – Partial or complete tears of stabilizing ligaments, including ACL, MCL, and other structures
- Tendon injuries – Conditions such as tendinopathy, partial tears, and chronic tendon degeneration that are slow to heal
Types of Orthobiologic Treatments We Offer
Town Center Orthopedics offers several orthobiologic therapies, each selected based on the patient’s specific diagnosis, overall health, and treatment goals.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
Platelet-rich plasma therapy uses a concentrated sample of your own blood—processed to isolate growth factors and platelets—and injects it directly into the injured area. PRP has been shown to accelerate tissue repair and reduce inflammation in conditions such as tendinopathy, ligament injuries, and mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis.
How it works: A small amount of blood is drawn from your arm, processed in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and injected into the affected joint or soft tissue structure under ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance.
Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC)
Bone marrow aspirate concentrate is derived from your own bone marrow, typically harvested from the pelvis. It contains a rich mix of stem cells, growth factors, and anti-inflammatory proteins that can support tissue regeneration. BMAC is often used for more advanced cartilage damage, bone healing applications, and complex soft tissue injuries.
How it works: Bone marrow is aspirated from the posterior iliac crest under local anesthesia, concentrated via centrifuge, and injected or applied surgically to the treatment site.
Allograft Tissue & Amniotic-Derived Products
In some cases, donor-derived biological tissue—such as amniotic membrane or umbilical cord tissue—may be used to deliver growth factors and anti-inflammatory properties to an injured area. These products are processed and regulated under strict FDA guidelines and are used in select clinical scenarios.
What to Expect During Orthobiologic Treatment
Most orthobiologic injections are performed in our office and take less than an hour from start to finish. Here is a general overview of what patients can expect:
- Consultation & Evaluation: Your physician will review your imaging, symptoms, and medical history to determine whether you are a candidate for orthobiologic therapy.
- Sample Collection: Blood or bone marrow is drawn in office and processed in a centrifuge to prepare your biologic material.
- Guided Injection: The concentrated biologic product is injected into the treatment area using image guidance (ultrasound or fluoroscopy) for precision.
- Recovery: Most patients experience mild soreness for a few days following the injection. Activity restrictions vary by treatment, and your care team will provide specific post-procedure instructions.
Improvement is typically gradual, with many patients noticing meaningful changes within 4 to 12 weeks as the biological healing process progresses.
Am I a Candidate for Orthobiologic Treatment?
Orthobiologic therapies are not appropriate for every patient or every condition. You may be a good candidate if you:
- Have been diagnosed with early-to-moderate osteoarthritis or a soft tissue injury
- Have not found sufficient relief with physical therapy, medications, or traditional injections
- Are seeking to delay or avoid surgery
- Are in generally good health without active infection or certain autoimmune conditions
A thorough evaluation with one of our orthopaedic specialists is the best way to determine whether regenerative treatment is right for your situation.
Frequently Asked Questions About Orthobiologics
Is PRP covered by insurance?
Orthobiologic treatments including PRP and BMAC are generally considered elective and are not typically covered by most insurance plans at this time. Our team will review cost and payment options during your consultation.
How many orthobiologic injections will I need?
The number of treatments depends on your diagnosis, the severity of injury, and your response to therapy. Some patients benefit from a single injection, while others may require a series of two to three treatments over several months.
How long does it take to see results?
Because orthobiologics work by stimulating your body’s natural healing processes, results are gradual. Most patients begin to notice improvement between 4 and 12 weeks after treatment, with continued benefits developing over 3 to 6 months.
Are orthobiologic treatments safe?
When performed by a trained orthopaedic specialist, orthobiologic treatments—particularly those using your own tissue such as PRP and BMAC—carry a low risk of adverse reaction. Your physician will discuss all risks and benefits with you before proceeding.
